Working with a partner, assemble an annotated playlist of 10 songs that address issues of modern racism and discrimination toward people of color in America. The selected songs can be from any genre of music. The assignment must be completed in a format that allows the work to be shared with classmates. So, for example, a shared Spotify playlist and blog post, or a screen capture of lyrics or video with voice-over annotations. Be sure that playlists created on Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, Soundcloud, or other sites are able to be shared and viewed/heard by others when provided with the proper link.
You are responsible for connecting with your partner such as through Canvas email or exchanging phone numbers. Both partners should submit the final product inside Canvas.
- The easiest way to do this assignment would be to use Google Docs so you and your partner can work together on the annotations for the songs. You can also hyperlink the song titles to audio or video for each track, or put a hyperlink to a compiled playlist from Spotify, YouTube, Apple Music, Soundcloud, or another service in your paper.
- You are not required to turn in your work in the format mentioned here. If you have another idea, do it! This is simply a suggestion for a fairly easy way to do it. See the assignment instructions for other suggestions as to how to complete the task.
- In terms of your annotations, you should include explanations of how each song fits the criteria of the assignment and your playlist. In other words, specifically what aspect of racism, discrimination or struggle is being addressed in the song? Consider quoting lyrics and highlighting specific moments that help to make your argument. Provide context, research, or background information about the songs and/or the topics they address. A thorough paragraph to explain each song is sufficient.
- Divide and conquer! Once you've got your songs selected, consider splitting the annotation writing in half with your partner to share the workload.
